U.S. trade delegation launches tour of the border

From The San Diego Union Tribune

Written bySandra Dibble June 4, 2012

TIJUANA - "A U.S. trade delegation on Monday launched a five-day Mexican border tour by visiting a maquiladora, meeting with city officials, and learning about the planned cross-border terminal between Otay Mesa and Tijuana's airport.

The group includes members of the private and public sectors. It is led by assistant U.S. Commerce Secretary Michael C. Camuñez together with the members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Also participating is the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Anthony Wayne.

One of the chief aims of the trip is to highlight the importance of the economic relationship with Mexico, the United States' second-largest export market. "There are many opportunities in this border region, and we should take advantage of them," Camuñez said.

Among the delegation's first actions was the signing of an agreement Monday between the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Tijuana Economic Development Corporation, known as DEITAC. Under the agreement, DEITAC will provide assistance to U.S. exporters seeking markets for their goods in Mexico.

DEITAC is expected to fill the gap left by the closing of the Tijuana office of the U.S. Commercial Service, a branch of the U.S. Department of Commerce that helps U.S. companies that want to find business opportunities abroad.

DEITAC president David Mayagoitia said the agreement can be a launching point for a range of opportunities that could increase the competitiveness of the border region. "This brings us many advantages, to start with better communication," he said.

The delegation has scheduled a roundtable discussion on Tuesday at the Mexico Business Center of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. Later in the week, the delegation's itinerary includes stops in El Paso/Ciudad Juarez, Laredo, and the industrial city of Monterrey."
