Las Gaviotas trip report.
Our family of 12 just returned from a week at the beach in Las Gaviotas. Trish and I have spent the last 12 winters in BCS. We do not linger much in
the border zone, usually just stopping for gas and pesos on the way down and and an overnite around Ensenada on the way back. I asked Baja Nomads
where might be a good place to have a family get together near the border. Las Gaviotas was the response of several of you. Las Gaviotas is indeed a
treasure of a community. 300 unique houses w/similar red tile roofs form this neighbor hood. Fairly high security with guards making the rounds every
hour. The house was quite affordable @approx $1200/week for a six bedroom 4000 sq/ft house. Las Gaviotas has its own private beach w/a fairly decent
surf break. At most there were only 12 surfers out at any time. My son Geoff surfed everyday and reported that the locals were very friendly. There is
a rather large heated swimming pool and hot tube. On Saturdays a local fish monger appears w/lots of fresh catch. We scored a yellow-tail that we
prepared 3 ways. Fillets grilled w/ mesquite, sashimi, and sevichi. A neighbor my son met surfing holds a PGA card and was able to get us a discount
and golf w/us at Bajamar golf course. What a beautiful course in exceptional condition with 4 holes playing along the coast. It was a bit depressing
to see what effects the drug war and the recession are having on the area. Many condos unfinished and a very slow tourist business climate. Everyone
in our group felt safe and enjoyed themselves. I would highly recommend Las Gaviotas to anyone interested in this type of vacation.

my first trip to baja in 4th grade with my buddy Joel and his parents. they had a place there and i saw my first grunion, dead, that wasn't able to
get off the beach the night before.
on the way home sleeping with my head against the half open rear window i lost my prized Padres hat to the gods of baja around La Joya. i think of
that nearly every time i pass that spot!

Woody do you remember surfing K38? It's only a couple miles north. Here's a couple pix.

38s was a zoo back then. Gus Cota (Sunset Cliffs guy) had the only permanent structure on the point. we usually surfed Rocketman's/Teresas or the
outside of Calafia where the condos are growing out of the beach.
but i remember...... thems were tha daze.
Calafia:
we'd bring out boards to the job site and split at 3:30 heading for Calafia when the hurricanes were spinning off Cabo. i used a weather radio to
track them before surfline or any other forecasts were available. we'd be in the water by 4:30 for the LEGO and surf our brains out. a quick stop at
Edwardo's taco shop in Rosarito and we'd be home by dark.
Rocketman's:

Glad you had fun with your family. What else did you do for fun? Splash? Rosarito Hotel? Hussongs? Sure beats the weather in the midwest during
July and August! Shout at the Moon. Tu Amigo, Tomas

Yep, that is why I have stayed long term lease here the last 3 years, just a place to relax and enjoy. I remember the shirt and think we talked in
the jacuzzi while enjoying the best of cold ones and hot jacuzzi, ahhhh Baja. You guys know you could contact Terry28 and see about renting his place
as it is very good location and he is surfer friendly too,LOL. Hope more people get to enjoy the place and since the free road from Rosarito to Las
Gaviotas is almost finish it is a snap going and coming from town. Take Care & Travel Safe---"No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN"

First surfed Gaviotas in 1963. We called it K41 to distinguish it from Rene's at K42. There were no houses at all. I kick my self in the butt
every time I drive by for not buying one when they first came on the market. Also started to surf 38 at the same time except that the older guys who
took us down called it "ule rock". (not sure how that should be spelled but it is a reference to that part of the male anatomy) Nobody there at that
time but a fisherman, his family, and the shack in which they lived.
