VW Rally?

I noticed as I was driving north out of La Paz yesterday small convoys and one or two at a time beautiful fixed up and nicely painted older Volkswagens, all shapes and and types...

Anybody know if it is a yearly event ?

I believe there's a rally in La Paz, possibly this weekend.

Saw a gorgeous Vdub in Mulege the other day in town. A few minutes later out on the river road there they were. I had to stop and say "Wow, gorgeous rig, Dude! Too bad no air conditioning." The driver pointed out that there was, indeed, "air conditioning"; the windshield pops open about two inches on the bottom-- how cool is that?

Love VWs!! Always have. Always will.

edited to correct my spelling of vdub to the correct Vdub!!
Proper respect where respect's due!
Love 'em!

Have any of you Nomads ever been to the old "Bug Ins" at the Orange County International Raceway (now demolished) in the late 70's and early 80's?

I went to 2. I built a '63 street bug and had a '64 bus for a while.

I went to one, just to look at them. I lived about 5 miles south of OCIR, in what was then called El Toro.

My first job as a 16 year old was at OCIR. I worked there in concessions and in maintenance till I was 18.

My first three cars were all Volkswagens; a 60 bug (6v), a 66 bug and a 67 hippy van with the bed. VWs DO teach you how to work on cars. I liked them cause they were economical to run and they did so well when you took them to the desert. The best VWs were in the 60s, IMO.

BTW, last night I went to a hotel here in San Carlos for a pretty large VW gathering. It must be a country wide or world wide event.

Thanks Hook. What I remember most was the competition where you drove your bug up to a line, pulled the engine, wheeled it on a floorjack around something 20 ft away, reinstalled the engine and drove 50 ft.

Guys were doin it in a little over a minute.

so easy. 4 bolts, electric, fuel and out she comes!

I like gaping the valves-- no fooling, its like tuning a musical instrument.

Even a girl can crawl under a cold engine in the early morning hours and make it purrrrrr...!

VW's ROCK!! (lol and roll, too)

My dad was a mechanic and we had a VW wrecking yard and maintenance shop. Not having any brothers, I was the son-stand-in and worked on them from the time I was about 8 years old on up. I have overhauled the motors and trannys many times. Dad used to test me when someone pulled in for maintenance asking me to diagnose the problem just by listening to it and I learned pretty good. I LOVED those cars!! Dad has since passed on but my love and appreciation for what he taught me as a kid, still lives. Dad used to race 'em in Denver and Colorado Springs in the old days. He won a lot of those races, too.
I have an uncle (dad's older brother) who has a White on White, convertible 1974 Super Beetle sitting in his garage that makes me drool! The thing is in immaculate shape! It's the limited edition model with the curved windshield.

Long live the BUG!!
