New report confirms massive drop in Baja California homicides

From The San Diego Reader

K. Mennem, August 21, 2012

"A new report that was done by the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI or National Institute of Statistics and Geography) backed up the dropping number of homicides in Baja California.

The study, which is believed to be more thorough than others previously released, showed homicides drop from 1,528 to 810 in the years 2010 to 2011. While Baja showed the most promising progress, other states homicides rose in 2011.

The institute receives monthly reports from the Attorney General which make up the basis for the statistics. Death certificates are also analyzed to weed out accident deaths from the tolls.

The nation of Mexico as a whole saw the yearly toll rise from 25,757 in 2010 to 27,199 in 2011. The state of Baja California Sur saw a drop in homicides from 55 to 42 during the same time period."
