Mexican Police Discover Lucrative Marijuana Plantation Behind Prison

From IBTIMES TV

Marisa Krystian | Aug 30, 2012

"Mexican police discovered more than 2,000 square meters of marijuana fields in the barren town of Tecate across the border from California on Wednesday (August 30), authorities reported.

The police uncovered the marijuana plantation in the suburb of El Hongo. It was hidden among shrubs and bushes, behind the Prison of El Hongo, which is considered one of the most advanced in the country.

Tecate is on a route favored by smugglers for its remote terrain and proximity to San Diego, according to police.

authorities said the field was suspected to be a lucrative cash crap for local drug gangs, with some plants reaching 6 feet in height.

Police found the field after receiving an anonymous tip.

Authorities started searching the area following the arrest of a suspected drug hitman who confessed he had hidden in the area and worked on the marijuana plantation after killing a policeman in Ensenada.

No arrests were made in relation to the discovery, and the crops were removed by state policemen and ten set on fire.

Mexico is America's top supplier of marijuana, and most cocaine consumed in the United States passes through Mexico."
