Mag Bay Report, Oct. 31 - wahoo ride out the storms

October on the Ridge outside Mag Bay ended like it started, with a full moon, a nice window of calm weather, and a pretty good wahoo bite. In between, there were a lot of windy days and two hurricanes which left impassable roads and minefields of flotsam in the estero and near shore outside. During the lunar cycle I made it out only once. That day, two days before hurricane Paul made landfall, was a fishing day that might not have actually been there, but yielded four hoos before a bumpy ride back in through the boca. Although Paul came ashore just a few miles from Lopez Mateos as a category 1 hurricane, there was surprisingly little storm damage to the town.

Friday the wind finally laid down after the storm. I fished Saturday for 8 wahoo, and Monday for 7 hoos, a dorado, and a 20# yellowfin. The tuna and dorado both hit wahoo lures. This window of calm brought more other boats than the last. All of the Mag Bay Outfitter boats were out as well as Reel Duck Too, What a Boat Bob, $eanote, Tabasco, and Angel Fire from Loreto. There were also a dozen or so divers aboard three pangas trying to get wahoo notches on the stocks of their spearguns. And, long range boats First String and Intrepid both made an appearance.

It is shrimp season and yesterday there were at least 12 big boats plying the waters outside Boca de Soledad. The Lopez panga fleet is also pulling nets in the estero, and a kilo of large camerones can be had just about anyplace in town for around 100 pesos (about $8 U.S.).

Attached in the order taken are pics of:

Jim King and Manfred Aistrich on Angel Fire with their first fish of the day Saturday, and another later.
Taylor Treadwell with a nice hoo caught on hook and line before he doffed his clothes and got wet for some mano a mano underwater.
First String with the hook down on the Ridge and balloons out trying to chum up some yellowfin.
Some of the 15 hoos I caught over the two days at the boat.

It looks like the Yo-Zuri Bonita was the lure to have on board for that trip.

Chris......Yes, last weekend the YZ Bonita was the lure of choice. But, the hoos are fickle. One day early in the month I caught 11 all on skirted lures. I start with one on each side and see what seems to be on the menu for the day......

Hola Bill,

I'm sooooo jealous. We landed one last moth out of La Bocana. My first one in 8 years of searching. I know I've got to go to PLM.

Is that a circle hook on the lure in the first pic? Did you remove the first hook from the Yozuri? if so Why? Are you rigging with multi-strand wire?

Great pics and thanks for the report. Looks like you'll have the frezzer full for the winter.

Don't forget you still owe me a couple of beers.

Saludos

Jerry.....I remember my debt, and congratulations on the wahoo. And, don't wait another 8 years until the next.
I use the Bonitas with both of the hooks that come on them until they rust or break and then replace them with Mustad 7732s, a J hook. Circles are for use with live or cut bait that might be swallowed resulting in gut hooked fish. I do remove the swivels and rings that come on the Bonitas, opening the eye of the hook and closing it back directly onto the loops on the lure.
I make up leaders for the Bonitas from 175# SS 49 strand cable.
Let me know when your are coming down and we will hook up for that Pacifico......
