Veteran's Day Weekend Norte Surf Trip
Hello fellow travelers. My name is Matt and I’m new on the forum and new to exploring Baja. I’m planning to head down over Veteran’s day weekend to
do some surfing & fishing. I figured I’d thow out my potential itinerary and see if anyone has any advise for me. I will be crossing from San
Ysidro or Otay on Friday afternoon about 1 pm and returning Monday afternoon, hoping to be home (Ventura, Ca) by midnight. I know I’m probably in for
some horrific border crossing wait-times and some So Cal holiday traffic, but I’ve made peace with this. I will be traveling in a 2WD pickup with a
small 8’ teardrop-style travel trailer.
So, since I will be crossing in the early afternoon and don’t plan on driving past dark, I will likely spend night 1 at K-58 - Alisitos. The next Day
I will be up at dawn for some morning surf, then on the road by lunch time unless the surf is lousy. From here, I plan to head down to Punta San
Jose, Punta Cabras or possibly Cuatro Casas where I will spend the next two nights.
I would like to go further, but I would much rather spend time in the water than on the road.
Other than a crummy road map, I have no knowledge of the areas south of Ensenada in terms of 2WD friendly road conditions and where to camp safely. I
would prefer to camp for free or as cheap as possible since I don’t require any amenities (except an ocean view), but I have been warned about thieves
targeting surfers & campers in baja norte.
If anyone has any info/advise to share with me I would really appreciate it. Also, will I need a tourist visa to travel to this area? If so, can I
get one at the Otay crossing or should I just brave the unknown at El Chapparel?
P.S. – If anyone wants to join me for some camping & surf I’m up to caravan. We could meet in SD or at La Fonda Friday night. I am an SUSer
(SUP) & Longboarder, hope that’s not a deterrent.

Welcome, Amigo. I thot I'd try to help out with a little info and go fishing for a few Nomads who like to visit Erendira area! Entry to Cabras would
likely be easier thru Erendira and then north. It's been awhile since I've visited but the vibe is safer than SQ area I believe. Nice area with good
fishing and surfing. It's a favorite of many--close to San Diego. Just go that's half the adventure, verdad? Tio

Most excellent suggestion Tiotomas! Erindira is a great close 3 day trip. Great restaurant in town. The co op sells fish if youre lazy or dont shore
fish. Coyote Cals offers a cantina situation.
Punta Cabras is usually fun! Have a blast
No worries

I agree with the others, a trip to Erendira (paved) and then north towards Punta Cabras (graded) is a good idea, if it is dry!

agree with everybody too. to go any further is a push for just 3 days-especially for your first time. i'd do the erendira/cabras deal. cool little
zone for fish and surf.
