San Diego drivers and riders win seven Baja 1000 class titles

Two years ago, the father-son team of Gustavo Vildosola Sr. and Jr. became the first Mexican national team to win the overall title in the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 off-road race.

Saturday, the Vildosolas officially made it two overall championships in a span of three years.

Driving a Ford Raptor Trophy Truck, the Mexicali-based team won by 15 minutes over the Chevy Silverado Trophy Truck piloted by B.J. Baldwin of Las Vegas.

Led by Open Buggy champions Luke and Mark McMillin and Chuck Hovey of Escondido, San Diego County drivers had a hand in six class titles.

The son-father McMillin team won the Open Buggy title by 80 minutes in addition to finishing 11th overall and the first four-wheel vehicle other than a Trophy Truck or a motorcycle.

The Carlsbad team of Trevor and Mark Anderson won the 1600cc Baja Bug division. Randy Swink of El Cajon led the team that won the Sportsman Truck title.

The 298 starters was the third-highest total in the 19 Baja 1000s that have run the Baja California Peninsula to La Paz. It was the 11th-highest total in the overall 45-race history of the event. A total of 174 trucks, buggies, motorcycles and ATVs finished the race.
