Baja California's and Sonora ?

Im just wanting to get a personal view out of you guys. The question I have is what are some of the differences in your travels between Baja and Sonora ? Besides Puerto Penasco and San Carlos , whats the gringo factor like ? I would assume theres less gringo tourism in Sonora than BC ? Im asking these questions due to a possible trip to check out Pitiquito,Caborca, and the beaches between Bahia Kino and Puerto Lobos. Any cool colonial towns to check out besides Alamos ?

Thanks,
Loye

There are also several other boards.
Google San Carlos Sonora forums and you get a few choices.

I think your assumption is correct. Living in Fenix, most AZ folks go to Rocky Point. When I tell friends and neighbors that we go to San Phelipe, they usually reply, "oh. just south of Rocky Point, down by San Carlos?" Then I have to explain Baja and geography becomes an issue.

The only other major location may be Hermosillo, however, being inland, I am not sure if there are any of the normal draw for gringos.

"Cool colonial town"? You'll have to cross the equator to find any. Or maybe somewhere deep in the mainland Mexico. Gringotowns are everywhere on the coast, even as far as Bahia Kino.

I've driven as far as Mazatlan. And to San Carlos, many times. The road is way different from Baja. It's a lot more developed. 4 lanes the whole way. Mostly flat.

There is no gringo community that I am aware of in Hermosillo or Caborca. There is in Puerto Penasco, Bahia Kino and San Carlos.

Obregon is a pretty nice town and the gateway to the headwaters of the Rio Yaqui and the mountains that generate it. It is not on the coast.Extremely fertile area with lots of vegetable farming.

Never been to the beaches between Penasco and Libertad.

Anyone here been to Pitiquito or Banamichi,Sonora ? They seem like cool little towns to visit and not much is publicized about them.

Don't know about Pitiquito and Banamichi. Very often the coolness of remaining small towns is ruined by their proximity to huge and densely populated mainland. As noted, the coastal highway is good. Highways leading inland from the coast are also good, with frequent buses. If some major mainland city is 2 hours away, the beach will be crowded with mainland families on weekends and holidays.

San Carlos is by far the best town I've been to in Mexico and I've been to a lot of them. 2nd place isn't remotely close. The beauty is off the charts, 50 pristine anchorages w/in 40miles, great mix of Mexican and gringo community. Tons of stuff to do, but still a small town.

I have a friend that has lived full-time in San Carlos for about 10 years. He has been to visit us in Playa El Burro and I'm sure he would be happy to give you his perspective on San Carlos vs something a little more remote. If you want to u2u me I'll give you his email address. Ron

My Baja Grande friends Ed and Michelle assembled a travel blog with plenty of 4x4 beach travel.
