For years I have enjoyed eating this fish at our local Anthony’s Restaurants. Now I’m finding it at the fish markets as well, in fact I cooked one up
last night.
I’ve read it comes from Baja, typically from the midriff area and BOLA. I have never caught one and haven’t heard any of the fisherman here talk
about them. Is it a fish any of you target or is it an incidental catch?
I think most are targeting this fish at the same time as any other groupers or deep rockfish. Mexfish says they will occur as shallow as 150 feet but
in the S of C, I've never caught them in less that 300 feet and more common in 4-500 feet. Maybe that's due to the pressure on them over here and
around Tortuga.
Mexfish also says that they top out at 20 lbs but I have seen much larger specimens than that, that I believe were Gulf Coney aka baqueta.
For table fare, I much prefer the true cabrilla or true red snapper (huachinango).
