Happy Valentines Day....Ojo de Liebre Whale trip
First off, I hope you all had a great a Valentine's Day as we did at Ojo de Liebre (Scammon's Lagoon)! Here is a Valentine card my daughter Sirenita
made me 20 years ago when we were living at the lagoon...he was 4!
We had a wonderful group of whale enthusiasts for this trip...including some nomads...vgabndo, standing wave, a lurker, jim....Here we are having
tacos at Hotel Cowboy.
Here we are heading out...pretty excited...the couple in the front are old friends of mine from my hometown...Geri & I were cheerleaders together
so it was a very special trip for us.
There were 1,178 whales in the lagoon. We saw hundreds and all sorts of great behaviors...nursing, breaching, spy hopping and were fortunate to
experience some close encounters as well. This week is when the moms start bringing their calves over to learn about boats and humans.
they usually cirlce the boat first to "read" the vibes...and if nobody is scared, they move in closer.
If all goes well, they stick around to check us out...this mom was clearly teaching her baby about the boat.
there was some interspecies contact.
It was so cool to see the calves riding on the mom's back or resting on her nose.
We also saw a unique white whale
here are a few highlights
this whale has some seriously strange growths on it's back.
and this poor whale had a nasty encounter with a killer whale and has bites out of her tail.
After our trip, we had a wonderful seafood lunch at the Interpretive Center...killer grilled garlic fish!!!!!!
I hope you liked coming along with us on our trip!!!
This is a slideshow of our 2 days at the lagoon.

I'm off to the lagoon again tomorrow for more whale fun with bajaguy's group....hasta pronto amigos

Bucko...the white whale is a gray whale just a very white one and she had a dark calf. She does not like boats...poor gal, she's probably been chased
by lots of boats trying to get a better look at her...like we did.
Maybe we can hook up again as we will be camping there too...U2U me your dates...love to get together and play some tunes.
Now, about that fiddle music...once we took out a really cool fiddle player...whale are known to respond to some instruments but grays are low
frequency lovers so they like the digereedoo....but arent crazy about the high pitched violin. The violinist waited till the whale were very close and
started fiddling and they immediately did an about face and swam away fast!!!!
Maybe they just didnt like the tune....perhaps some good baja fiddle tunes might turn their crank.
