Realistic broadband speeds in CSL?
We're moving to Cabo next month through the end of the year and I'd like to set my expectations as I work for a US company that requires a lot of
video conferencing. 10 MBPS download and 768 KBPS upload would do the job. Tel Mex state this to be available and mentioned the possibility of an
additional 10 MBPS . This would be awesome! But is it realistic?
Thanks!

Telmex offers three plans: 5, 10 and 20 down. With 5 down you could get 768 K up and with 10 down 1.3 up. Not sure of the 20 mbs plan which is 900
pesos a month. Speeds are subject to distance from switching gear and quality of lines.
I have found the speeds are usually lower than advertised but not by much. Sometimes the higher speeds are not available if you are too far from their
switching gear locations.

Thanks for taking the time to respond! Our agent wants us to arrive then go find a place with her which works for me. However, I think my first trip
should be to the TelMex store in CSL and figure out our limitations in terms of areas as you mentioned.
Thanks again =)

I'll second greengoes message. Advertised speeds will be at the central office and go downhill from there. Copper is not a great conductor of
broadband and distance matters. That said, I was pleasantly surprised when I rented a house in the Loma Azul area of Mulege (a couple miles from city
center) a few years ago and found the DSL speeds faster than what I get at home.

It will all depend on where you are at in CSL, the max speed varies a lot from one area to another, don't just assume that because you pay for the
higher speed plan that you'll actually get it.

So true. Our speed takes a nosedive at around 4 pm when the kids all go online.

Be sure to get the package with unlimited free calls to USA and within Mexico, and no charge for cell phone calls. Our package runs about $995mn per
month.

Thanks - this has all been great info. I don't mind how much it is as long as I can get decent speed or I am going to have an issue. We'll be in
Pedregal but as you all mention, infrastructure is everything so its a case of where the Tel Mex infrastructure is.
Mega Cable isn't in CSL I take it?

Others have provided important considerations ..
Each house/condo/unit in building/complex/development can have differences in service ..
One must learn to roll with this sort of thing, as there are going to be many others, and definitely adjust expectations.
Don't expect to hear 'truth' from Telmex, so always have plan B ready.
Wish you the best!

For some reason the 4 channels from Canada are gone...nothing but snow. That may change your mind about mega cable.

We actually have a Mac Mini hooked into the TV that we use for most shows to be honest. We watch some cable but not a lot these days except for the
news. I am interested in Mega Cable more for the broadband speeds. Do they offer internet in San Jose?

Sorry I dont know anything about their internet services.
I use USTVNOW over the internet but it depends on the speed of Telmex and is not always enjoyable.

Shaw special For Canadian snowbirds...If you are a Shaw Satellite subscriber, they will send you a free dish and a receiver for $50 to your Canadian
address. Once you get it set up Baja, you activate the service and get a rebate for the receiver. One can't get Shaw phone or Internet via cable, but
Shaw will suspend your cable TV subscription while you are away.
For a more permanent move CaboSat that might be worth checking out:

I live in Fenix, AZ and San Philepe, MX and do Biz from both locations.
I live in the desert in AZ and we only have DSL from Centurylink. I use VOIP for my phone, (Obi Hai and Magic Jack Plus)
When I first went VOIP I had problems. My VOIP was dropping, during the Up process.
I was getting about 290K up and about 8Mb down.
I called Centurylink and they sent a technician out who found a problem in the main CO.
I now pay for 12Mb down and 869K Up
I get realistic speeds of 9-10Mb down and about 700K up.
Bottom line, it works great for everything I do, including streaming music, netflix etc.
In Mexico I just signed up for internet through Telnor.
I get about 3Mb down and about 300K up, and it seems to work fine with the occasional VOIP drop.
Good Luck, sounds fun
