San Diego mayor wants Mitt Romney to lead Olympics bid
SAN DIEGO - San Diego Mayor Bob Filner says he wants Mitt Romney to lead a bid to bring the Olympic Games to San Diego, and its Mexican neighbor to
the south, Tijuana.
Filner says that he plans to ask the former presidential nominee to be honorary chairman of the bid for the 2024 Summer Games.
He says he and Tijuana Mayor Carlos Bustamante hope to name a bi-national committee next week to lead the effort.
Filner, a Democrat, says the Republican Romney will give instant credibility to the effort.
Mitt Romney oversaw the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. He also owns a house in La Jolla.
He is currently a board member of Marriott International, Incorporated.
Romney has yet to comment on whether he's interested in taking the position.

For the 1984 Olympics held in Los Angeles, I recall there was at least one event held at a venue in San Diego.

You may not like his politics but he knows how to run a business. I personally had ties to the Utah Winter Olympics. I can assure you that the
athletes and those in the know credit him for making those Olympics successful. He had help but his leadership was obvious from the first day he took
over.

Can you imagine the border crossing situation if those Olympics were "bi-national" ?

1984 LA Olympics were the first to turn a profit since 1932.
Salt Lake Olympics were the most expensive EVER to that point and were "saved" by a billion $$ federal bailout. As a taxpayer in San Diego I say get
the guys who ran the LA Olympics in here and we MAY consider it.
We can't even get the potholes filled around here. Filner needs to stop working on his 'legacy' and at least try and govern. While we are at it lets
hear for the Los Angeles Chargers!
1984 they had the cross country equestrian events at Fairbanks Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe (San Diego)

Now or Later ?
Reading the SDUT the other day, the question seemed to be how soon the Filner recall movement would begin in earnest.
He might not be around to worry about the bid.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A cross-border bid for San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, to host the 2024 Summer Olympics appeared dead before arrival Tuesday when the
U.S. Olympic Committee said international rules don't allow two countries to mount a joint candidacy.
The news was delivered as San Diego Mayor Bob Filner and his Tijuana counterpart, Carlos Bustamante, prepared to name a cross-border planning
committee within the next week and unveil a logo.
