Tropicbird
If you haven't been offshore you have never seen one of these. This one was basking on the calm sea 30 miles out of Loreto this afternoon.

Great action photos of this beautiful bird. What is it called, and why are they always offshore?
The SAME boiling water that softens the potato hardens the egg. It's about what you are made of NOT the circumstance.

It's a White Tailed Tropicbird, and they are solitary and pelagic, spending most of their lifetime at sea........
Similar to a "Soledad" adventurer, know in these parts.......

Tropicbird
I think it is probably a red-billed tropic bird. The white-tailed is an Atlantic species.

These are amazing looking birds. Saw one off of Punta Chivato 7 or 8 years ago. Only time I have seen one. Didn't know what it was at first. It
was sitting on the water. Thought it was tangled in something until it flew away. The person I was with had seen one before and knew what it was.

Tropic birds are seldom seen near shore, but in early summer can often be spotted bobbing like a ball of fluff while trolling near the center of the
SOC.
Here's a sequence of another one that let me get close enough to catch it taking flight.

oooh, nice. Probably never get to see one myself since I don't do well on the open ocean, so thanks for the photos. They must nest on the islands huh?
One egg at a time too. Nature is somethin.
