Bad Highway
Just arrived at our place in Asuncion for a quick weekend get away. Yes the road from Vizcaino is in bad shape...no real news there. But the road
south of El Rosario sucks for about 120 miles!!! Reminds me of the highway maybe 15 years ago...big pot holes, rough road, and crumbling highway.
Maybe this section is targeting for repair and thus the neglect. Anyways, be careful

Funny, I just drove North from Loreto and the Northbound side is what I would consider very good condition with the normal exception South of Catavina
but not as bad as it used to be.
I was thinking "overall, this is the best condition the entire 700 miles that I can remember."

Yes, Howard, it is that bad...relative to what it has been for the past five to ten years....
I suppose the difference between now and then....the pot holes nowadays don't always line up with your tires like they did in the past...you know pick
your poison....pot hole or oncoming semi....

Did you drive straight through from the boarder? How long did it take? I have made the drive before but have always broken the trip up.

Drove South to Loreto two weeks ago and it seemed fine to me except as mentioned South of Cativina. The road gets better each year and we make the
drive 3 - 4 times a year.

Churro-we normally do the drive down in one day and it takes us about 13 hours. We only stop for gas and potty breaks (two kids with us). On our
return we often break it up. This trip we left Friday afternoon and drove to San Quintin.
Diana, no signs of work on the road from Vizcaino. I think the positive of the road getting worse is that one is less likely to get sucked into that
false sense of security only to be jarred back into reality with the surprise crater.

I posted about the El Pedregrosso to the BOLA turnoff crappy surface a few weeks back. It's really terrible. Makes you wish you were driving someone
else's vehicle.
That said, road conditions in BCS are way better than in BC. With the curious exception of the road from Loreto down to Ligui. One would think that
the Villa Group would be lobbying to get that section repaved, since it represents the total trip from the airport to the Villa property. They've
already struck a deal with Aeromexico to subsidize flights to Loreto.
But, seriously, the stretch of highway from Loreto to Ligui is the worst in all BCS on Mex 1.

Gee anyone remember the remarkable conditions the road
was in about 1979? Now that was BAD. That a side I did
notice and interesting rectangular patching process on the
potholes being fixed. Instead of just filling and steam rolling
the round potholes where they come up, the patch repairs
that I saw were square to rectangular with smooth and straight boarders. Just came back from
Bahia de Los Angeles
and for the most part the rood was in good shape. some of the areas between Catavina and El Rosario were getting
potholed as mentioned but not yet to the point of looking
like a runway buster bomb hit it, but if not fixed soon it
will get pretty bad. The section that was widened out
between Ensenada and Santo Tomas is has some real nice improvements.

Mama Espinoza is credited for saying "Bad Roads Bring Good People..." 
Hwy. 1 of 1973 (San Quintin to Santa Rosalia/San Ignacio) was paved so thin (and narrow) to get the job finished fast and under budget, that it wasn't
long before pot holes were the norm... Many trips I made from '74 to '85 and there were many, many holes in that highway and the Bahia de los Angeles
highway.

Yes there are potholes both sides of Catavina.
The only reason that they pee you off is that the rest of the trip from Cabo to the Border is so easy and smooth.
Oh and it seems so much wider than 88.
The border wait Tues AM was 1hr 20mins. at Tecate. Atleast they didn't do a secondary.
BTW what's up with As$&*^$s at the Loreto check point? Felt like we were strip searched? Took 30mins.

Since the government was installed, they have closed many of these checkpoints. Surprisingly, the Checkpoint North of Loreto is the first one
travelers will encounter in a trip up from Cabo.
The checkpoint just outside Todos is closed, and the one at the Ag stop just outside of La Paz, is just that again, an Ag checkpoint. No soldiers.
Personally, I have always encountered the most invasive checkpoint outside San Ignacio, up or down.

Its way better than it used to be....The potholes of the late 70's into all of the 80's would drive you nuts.....the widening of the last couple of
years has made it wonderful;
