Nice rookie snorkling at BOLA
Here is a great spot to take kids or adults who are a little squeemish about snorkling in the ocean - we visit every trip as it's a nice spot to relax
for an hour or so. It is on the south-west side of Smith Island (big volcano on the north end), opposite La Gringa.
This photo is looking west toward the town and La Gringa; we anchor the boat just inside the natural rock jetty.
This photo is standing at the same spot as the one above, turning to the east and you can see the man-made rock weir that the incoming tide is running
over filling the lagoon.

If you look at the island in Google Earth, it will be obvious where this is. Almost cuts the island in two.

so you didn't get all the way back in there? we got the tin soldier over that rockpile once and had a look around but didn't go too far back. the tide
really moves in there. any guesses who/why built the dam?

This is a great spot for a snorkle, hike, lunch and whatever else your desire. We used to call it the reversing waterfalls. There was a fence on top
of the rock pile and the lagoon was used to corral sea turtles by the local fisherman. The opening was much narrower years ago and was fun to snorkel
surf the tide over the fence at high tide. Now you can take a 28' panga with ease through at high tide. I did that in April of this year.
Make sure to motor or hike one cove south and visit the mangrove colony. This is the nothernmost mangroves in the Gulf of California.

What Wiles said, the Reversing Waterfalls. The opening over the fence was narrow, you had to aim yourself just right as the water rushed you through
the opening into the lagoon. This is one of my favorite places. There used to be a huge Osprey nest there too, until someone burned it down.

If I remember correctly, there used to be traveling shark camps set up on the islands and around the bay. It was thought that it was burned down by
one of the traveling shark crews. The town was so small then, it's hard to believe that a local would have done that.
