A Man With A Fishing Rod
The first day I met Phil C at his place in Santa Martha, he introduced me to this fishing spot.
Below the cliff near surf spot K 38.5, the rip current forms an outflow channel, just fine for fishing.
This morning, Francisco Gonzalez from north of Rosarito, is fishing.
In the moments I go for my camera, Francisco already has this pargo amarillo in his bucket.
This fish took a dead shrimp bait.
Francisco pitches his bait aside the descending channel carved by the rip.
His bait rig, in the territories of Loreto and Lopez, we call "rendal". Don't know it in English, but looking them over it would be like a "clam
rig". Main line to a swivel, on to a dropper loop he has a mustad bait holder hook, on down to a 6 oz. weight. Sit back and watch the rod tip.
His fishing rod is a 12 footer, and 30 years old. The reel, a Daiwa AS9050, is more than 20 years old.
Apologetic yet proud of his rod, he explains it has lasted this long because he makes his own repairs, building his own guides.
He baits his hook with a chocolate clam while we visit
This young lady is curious what Francisco is catching. A sage, and learning of my intent to write a post, she surmises some here may prefer an image
of an authentic Baja surfer girl than Baja fish bait.
I don't disagree.
For reference, this path returns to Santa Martha. The Jesus statue is on the hill up ahead.

Nice rod wrap.
He needs to smooth out the guides like in the last photo.
What test line is that?

Hey coconaco . . . I failed to pay attention to his line. It is likely in the 50 lb range adding strength for the hoist up, and the lay of the coil
on the ground.
