Telcel vs. Movistar in Todos Santos

When I was last in Todos Santos, I used a Telcel SIM card in my unlocked HTC One cell phone and had no problems at all. I had no problem with voice reception anywhere I needed it, and even had 4G data access as far north as Las Tunas (where we stayed) and as far south as Rancho Nuevo (a few KM south of Pescadero). Where I live in Massachusetts, just 20 miles west of Boston, I almost never get 4G data with T-Mobile!

Anyway, I've heard that Movistar is less expensive, and that it also has coverage in Todos Santos - the question is, is the coverage as thorough as that of Telcel? Or should I stick with the carrier that I know works well?

Thanks as always for the helpful responses.

Had MoviStar way the hell and gone out in the sticks in Pescadero a few years ago and it worked fine there, and all over the area. The cape to La Paz. Sometimes the young girls in the phone stores, are so dumb they have to call a friend and ask which end to put their lipstick on, so don't expect to get comprehensive calling plan information.

I haven't looked at the MoviStar website, but the Telcel website was pretty thorough regarding the calling plan and had a nice Android app so that I could track my usage.

I should mention that my information about Telcel being more expense than Movistar is purely anecdotal. I'd be curious to know if it's based on fact.

I get nailed HARD when I call the kids in Michoacan and they have TelCel like me. Depends on when and for how long I guess to decide on which calling plan is best. I have a VooDoo doll hopefully that looks a little like Carlos Slim de Helu and the sucker has been punctured 10,000 times.

Hi Paul. I have Movistar here in Todos Santos. I recently purchased an android phone, it cost me $1,300 pesos and it comes with a plan called "ilimitado" - unlimited. I get all my calls to other Movistar phones free for the month, 500 minutes free to Telcel users, free gmail, facebook and twitter. For all of this I pay only $200 pesos per month. I can use my wi-fi and have free internet access. When using the Movistar network it would cost me to access youtube or other sites.

My personal experience with the young ladies in the office has been very good, very communicative and very positive.

Thank you DavidE and Katiejay99 for the responses. I'd feel better knowing that I'm not fattening Carlos Slim's coffers, but not if it meant having subpar service and coverage. Thankfully it seems that using Movistar is a viable option.
