Dashboard camera...Test driving one
I installed an HD dashboard cam like you see in all the Russian videos. Very small; size of a fuzzbuster; suction cup to windshield.
I had to buy an SD card for it, and my 16 GB SD card memory runs for about 4 hours of HD video and audio before recording over. I can use lower
resolution and fewer frames per second and get 4X the recording time.
The camera records in 2-minute, 5-minute or 10-minute segments with no lapse between files. So at the end of 4 hours, it writes over the first little
segment, then the second and so on.
I'm happy with it so far. I can't wait to show a Mexican cop the little flip-down 2.5" screen, showing where I carefully stopped at the stop sign.
And his face as he comes to the window (easy to turn sideways or backwards).
If it works well for the summer, I'm thinking of bringing some down and installing them on friends' cars in Mexico.
Might actually slow down blatant cop extortion

I saw that video too!
EDIT: This one: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-dash-cam/
There are a few tricks to making them work right, so if you can't look up reviews on the internet, you may get frustrated.
Then you can U2U me and pay me to put one in your car...

I'm not sure where you are from Vandy, but just a caution for anyone traveling in or through California - It IS illegal to have anything
suction-cupped to your windshield. It would be humiliating to have video proof of your own law-breaking.
edit lame typo

Oops! I forgot about Kalifornia.
According to "C", my whole setup is illegal.
And I have to post a notice in "B".
And I don't think mine is for "improving driver safety" per "A"
(13) (A) A video event recorder with the capability of monitoring driver performance to improve driver safety, which may be mounted in a seven-inch
square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver, in a five-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to
the driver and outside of an airbag deployment zone, or in a five-inch square mounted to the center uppermost portion of the interior of the
windshield. As used in this section, “video event recorder” means a video recorder that continuously records in a digital loop, recording audio,
video, and G-force levels, but saves video only when triggered by an unusual motion or crash or when operated by the driver to monitor driver
performance.
(B) A vehicle equipped with a video event recorder shall have a notice posted in a visible location which states that a passenger’s conversation may
be recorded.
(C) Video event recorders shall store no more than 30 seconds before and after a triggering event.

A friend of mine had one on the dash of the cement mixer he was driving when he crossed a picket line. One of the picketers jumped up on the front of
the truck and then claimed he had been struck and that the driver tried to kill him. When the police arrived to arrest my friend he just showed them
the video and the picketer was arrested for making a false report.

I just put the camera on the visor with rubber bands and hid the wire.
Next step: don't get pulled over in CA.
I can actually put it INSIDE the visor with a little hole for the lens if I get worried.
But in Mexico I want it on the suction cup mount so I can turn it while driving.

windshield items
It appears gps units can be placed if meeting following
(12) A portable Global Positioning System (GPS), which may be mounted in a ( )1 seven-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest
removed from the driver or in a ( )2 five-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver and outside of an airbag deployment
zone, if the system is used only for door-to-door navigation while the motor vehicle is being operated.
