minimal US auto insurance
Does any one have a handle on low cost auto insurance for a Baja resident making occasional crossings North of the border? This would be for insurance
on the US side that would fulfill the Calif. DMV requirement.

depends if the vehicle is Baja license platted.
If it's US plated. . . need a US policy.
If it's Mexico plated - buy a couple day policy in line at the border.

This is where I got my Mexican insurance from, but it can't hurt to ask about US insurance, also. My US insurance is through Mercury, but I went
through an insurance agent, and I doubt if they do short term policies.

physical US address
The problem I am running into with these US carriers is the requirement for a US 'garaged address'. I already got shot down with Wawanesa. Even with
AAA it seems to depend on who you talk to and at which branch. There are so many members here getting help with rego in California from AAA youwould
think that there would be a company wide directive. No such thing. Sue , I enjoy reading all of your posts on this and other boards as you are ahead
of me in the logistics of making the move South. This insurance thing may turn out to be the biggest hassle yet. I am only interested in this to keep
my registration current until I can find out more about South Dakota plates.

Dairyland offers short term month to month policies for people who only occasionally travel north. Our vehicles are registered in Oregon, and so far
they have accepted our Mexican policy as sufficient insurance for renewal purposes. It seems like a complete waste of money to have to maintain a
useless US liability policy for a vehicle that is south of the border.

You can get a PMB, and that will give you a US address for insurance purposes, and any other matters that you need a US address for. My insurance
company still has my former physical address in San Diego as my van being garaged (actually parked) there. I won't bother to change it, though.

If you are moving to the Baja to live permanently, you should import your vehicle and insure with a Mexican company most now have rider on the back of
the policy with US coverage.

So David, when ever I read about the absolute necessity of keeping current tags, I can ignore it? As an upside of keeping the same insurance agent for
25 years it seems they are going to downsize my policy to a competitive rate to help me out. I did not expect it.

This is Mexico. Politicians have absolutely nothing better to do than draft legislation that helps line their pockets. But the new breed has TURBO:
Computer databases.
So, what has been for 30 years can change in a flash. I'm going to peel off the stickers on the plates when I go north. I am not a resident of the
state of confusion, I mean California, and when I return I will have a different set of plates on the car. Bet-cha nickel I get stopped. Tough. Let
'em figure out who I'm not with the new plates. With any luck at all, a new lens for the eyes, some superglue for the disc, I will be saying HASTA LA
VISTA MF anyway. Volcanic crater lake in the summer and palms and trade winds in the winter. I'm old. I deserve 7 dollar a night hotel rooms that are
the same as 50 dollar Baja California motel rooms. The tamale lady in the morning, 30 cents per. Shade grown coffee, and women falling all over
themselves lining up to help me clean my house. My kids just told me Jesús scored 300 pounds of lobster the 1st week, and they have reserved a four
pound monster for me "Al Vapor".
Minimum Coverage in California would cover wrinkling a fender, and if it ain't paid for out of pocket, your DL gets suspended. I'm going to buy one of
those step-through scooters, nail a box on the back fender for groceries and park the car. From what I understand they get something like 80 mpg.
For now all I have to do is avoid running into Freddy Kreuger the surgeon. And keep the defibrillator charged.
