Carretera Libre a Ensenada

There is progress being made on the free road south of Rosarito. It was oiled today in preperation for the concrete. It was done in sections and usually when they do this, people in a hurry drive over it trying to get to Papas n Beer and ruin it so they have to do it again.
The good part is many of them wreck and it creates a good landfill. Take it easy down here you guys. Muy Peligroso

Carretera Libre

Hey Ski Man, next time you take the "libre" ... go to the top of the long grade on the South side of the La Mision Valley. Pull over near the top and look down into the arroyo on the East side of the road.
You will see the largest pile of wrecked cars in North America. And, a trail leading down where the locals can remove parts, extract gas, etc.
Actually, they usually work pretty quickly because if too many cars get added on the weekend it is hard to complete the demo of the ones you started on.
Also, there are vague rumors in the valley about midnight applications of gravel to the highway at strategic spots when the parts supply runs low. Never got that one confirmed, just lots of grins.

Trails

Hey Runner, that trail you mention is just to make it easier and faster to get to the Cervezaria after wrecking your car! That's a planned part of the trip for many locals passing that way on Friday nights.

carretera libre

Great response, Ski Man.
Used to sit on Sunday afternoons across the valley at the orphanage and watch the crashes, never failed to have at least one.
And, I have seen many wheelbarrows and wagons coming up that trail, amazing how clean you can scalp a wreck when you put your mind to it.
Once on a pre-run in deepest darkest central desert we broke a bolt on our fender brace and stopped at an upside down wreck to scavenge a simple bolt to stop the banging.
Would you believe???? Not one single useable bolt left on that entire carcass> amazing!
Ah, but that's the Baja we love.

Before the road was paved there were far fewer vehicles and thus more time to "recover" whatever you wanted from an abandoned car or truck. Many, after they were stripped of all usable removable items were taken to the final step: Flat metal, e.g., roof and sidepanels from the doors were cut or torched away and used for the ceilings and walls of huts along the way. Only in Baja.
