Mag Bay Fishing: La Poza Grande, Santo Domingo
Just back from exploring these two sites in Mag Bay for camping and fishing from a kayak/inflatable. Have consulted Kira and Graham books, but was
wondering if anyone had fished these waters recently or had any problems camping near the lighthouse (El Faro) near Santo Domingo or south of San
Jorge near La Poza Grande?
Any snook?
Also noted that were hundreds of small weird colored and weird shaped spiders south of San Jorge spinning their webs across the back roads in the
Mangroves. Their spun lines were strong enough to keep them on the car after traveling 70 miles back to Loreto!

We spent 3 Christmas vacations at La Poza Grande. The last was 5 years ago. We were told back then to be careful, but never had any problems, and
always had a great time. One year 2 cars drove by our camp in 2 weeks time. Never saw another boat in the esteros.

Great trip! There were four of us in two vehicles towing one off road pop-up camper, and hauling an Achilles inflatable with a 30 hp Tohatsu, one
hobie 16 foot fisherman kayak and one hobie sport kayak. Distance from Nopolo to camping spot is about 110 miles with only 6 miles of dirt road. Some
road construction north of Insurgentes.
Used both Kira/Kelly 's book and Graham's book on Mag Bay fishing and camping sites. Place has not changed. Still a great small boat/kayak fishing
spot.
Advice is to fish the quarter moons because of less turbulence and higher water clarity, and we did not hit it at the perfect time. But we do have
high tides in the mornings, and not much wind.
Dale and Bob in the inflatable were able to cover a lot more territory, but we caught fish as soon as we could start paddling. And once we found the
deep spots, we caught the usual suspects--bass, corvina, broom tail grouper, pompano, and halibut. We used mainly plastics, and trolling rebel
fastracs (black and silver). We looked for snook and cast poppers into the mangroves, but no luck.
Great camping spot, no security issues and local fisherman were helpful in letting us know where the sand bars were.
A one of the kind place....

Water
great fishing area!! Kira does not get it !! the coyotes are looking for water,,,,, Much more than scraps !! if the area did not have so much pacific
fog with the dew... the coyotes would not be there.........any fool with a beer can(something close of a boat) ,,writes a book and some folks think
they are gods....do your own exploreing and trips....MY God !!!!!

Gary has it right about the moon and the tides in upper Mag Bay. I fished LM area several times in the mangroves and channels. I've found the water
temps very important. Summer to late fall seems to be the best. I've been skunked in Jan/Feb time frames.
