Dont' bother with Verizon unless you are in Ensenada, LaPaz or Cabo.

Verizon

verizon only has service in a small bubble around major cruise ship ports in Baja and the coast strip between the border and Ensenada.

And roaming charges are a killer.

Tel cell is good, as is moviestar, I also believe it depends on where your resort area happens to be, Tel cell seems to be better (now) in the santa rosalia area then moviestar. I am thinking you are purchasing a mexican cell phone, not taking a verizon down with you. If you are bringing one down with you, the older plans if you still have one are very good, but any newer plan is for crap, you won't get very good reception anywhere other than areas stated above

I switched to the ATT Viva Mexico plan and it's working really well in Ensenada.

They use the TelCel Towers and the upgrade was only $30/month.

My husband, on the other hand, has Verizon and it has been utterly useless.

Tel Cel has limited service has you move down the peninsula, but it picks back up when you get to the Sea of Cortez side (or so we have been told).

Verizon says that they work in Mexico, but apparently they don't realize that Baja is a part of Mexico. I have ATT and the Viva Mexico plan and it works great (most of the time). Our neighbors got Verizon...it didn't work at all and then they had a horrible time dropping the contract they had even though they signed up because Verizon told them that they would have coverage.

Whenever I hear that rainy, chill wind blow. I think it may be time to head for Mexico. Tengo que obedecer mi corazon!

Do NOT go with Verizon. Their idiot salespeople go, "Yes, we work all over Mexico!" and then you get out into the real Baja and poof, phone broke no workey. The problem is that Verizon only allows CDMA (the technology they and Sprint use) roaming, but Telcel's CDMA footprint is tiny.

Your Verizon phone will work in Tijuana, central Rosarito, Ensenada near the cruise ship, and Tecate. It will work in Los Cabos and La Paz and maybe in Loreto (I had AT&T last time I went to Loreto but I remember Verizon people having service).

AT&T works anywhere Telcel works, but it's expensive even with the Viva Mexico plan; if you're going to be staying for a while, it'll be cheaper to get a Telcel phone on the prepaid Amigo plan and just buy credit at any 7-Eleven, Oxxo, Soriana, etc.
