Mission San Xavier del Bac

Wonderful photo -

This mission, still an active church, is just south of Tucson. The interior was restored not too long ago and is very well done.

Still on the O'odham Indian reservation, Fr. Kino first visited here 1692, construction of the church pictured in Cortez Blue's photo was believed to have begun in 1783.

Also known as the White Dove of the Desert.

An historic place to visit.

This second photo was taken during Carleton E. Watkins's photographic excursion through Southern Arizona in the 1880s. Watkins trip is reviewed in the Journal of Arizona History, Vol. 28, No. 4 - Winter 1987. Included in that issue (and some are on-line) are other images of the church, including an interior shot. Watkins is a lesser know photographer who also did some nice Yosemite stuff.

I can not tell a lie!

This is a photo I took at San Xavier del Bac about 1 year ago. I decided to age it for my web site.

I was fortunate that I was able to meet the husband and wife team that has been working on the preservation for over 20 years. He is from the Tohono O'odham Nation and she is from Italy.

I particularly like the oozing emulsion on the edges.
