Road conditions south of San Felipe
Yesterday, we completed the Guerro Negro to Mexicali part of our trip north. Nothing changed from our trip south three weeks before. The part from
Hwy 1 to Coco's Corner is still a drivers nightmare. Pot holes. washboards, large rocks protruding from the ground, all blackened by rubber tires.
Some sharp to cut your tires if you end up hitting than missing them. We managed to do the round trip without any cut tires. No I did not deflate.
One vehicle coming toward us was a 4X4 pickup driven by a lady in her late 30's on her first trip through. Seemed to be wondering, "what the heck
have I done"!!!! Newer pickup so should have no problems. Rubber looked maybe 60%. We spent as much time driving on the sandy side tracks, that are
only available north of Coco's Corner. Much easier on the tires & car. Had a maroon Mexican Bronco pass us on a straight a way, going easy
60mph, and we were on the side sandy strip. THAT would have cost us a windshield for sure. They are still working on the highway north of San Felipe
replacing bridges perhaps.
There were 5 bridge detours, and one big construction project with huge equipment a few miles south of the bridge projects. Going south &
returning north through the military inspections were an easy stop. I would do it again, but not sure my wife would do it again. She says, definitely
NO, but then again. Time heals all wounds, and hopefully two years from now, she'll be up to it again. She's a tough lady, but THAT road she has
trouble with as a navigator!!!!!!!And she refuses to drive that route. Plus, next year I'll be 80, and I guess no Mexican Insurance company will
insure me once I hit 80. Anyone have suggestions???? (yes, the thought of having asked the young lady who stopped to visit for her phone number to
be my driver next time did occur to me. But alas. At my age, I don't think as fast as I used to.

Have you asked Baja Bound or Discover Baja about insurance? Check with Neal Johns... he's been 80+ driving in Baja for many years now!
