Bad/Good times to cross southbound San Ysidro Friday?

There's lots of information about wait times and traffic for crossing southboud -- but my searches are coming up dry on going south at San Ysidro.

Is it because it's always easy and fast? That would be nice :)

If I get going early enough from Santa Cruz, CA tomorrow, I'd like to try to get as far as Ensenada and hotel overnight there before going on. Usually I stay in San Ysidro and try to cross really early in the morning.

Does anyone know if I'll be waiting in long lines to enter Mexico if I try this early afternoon on a Friday? (tomorrow, 12/20)? I already have a tourist permit that I got through Discover Baja.

Thanks!! :)

Hi there eguillermo, I go to TJ every Friday from San Diego so, anytime after say 3:30PM expect to wait upwards of 30 to 40 minutes to cross and it probably will not diminish until say 11PM

Friday after work (4pm +) is when you can expect a wait to get into Mexico, as you will be joining all others doing the same... It is what it is, unless you want to drive to Tecate and go straight to Ensenada from there on Hwy. 3. Same miles from the border... Just driving to Tecate from San Diego is the addition.

The tourist card you got at Discover Baja still must be validated (stamped) by the INM officials at the border. So, you have to stop and park and walk to the INM office with your pre-paid FMM,... and passport (just in case).

Awesome guys, thanks for the information!

That really helps to know that it will probably be a tolerable wait before 3:00 or so. Tecate is always my choice coming back, and might try it going in.

Gracias!!!

Don't go to Otay Mesa hoping for quicker southbound entry, either—it really sucks on Friday afternoons, and then there's traffic on all the nearby roads as people head both south and back into TJ.
