Menage a Trois... Whale Mating Dance in Asuncion

I received a phone call from Juan who was out fishing for the cooperativa...he says...quick look out the kitchen window...there were 3 grays whales right in close splashing around. I asked him how long they had been there and he said about 15 minutes so I asked him to pick us up at our beach so we could get a closer look.

So we jumped in and were treated to a beautiful mating dance for over an hour as the three whales circled around, swam upside down, swirled & twirled, rolled over each other and generally played in the kelp bed by our place here.

It was neat to see how they surfaced draped in kelp...right in front of bajafam's RV in ensenadita cove next to our house. They were in very shallow water and seemed like one of the males was a juvenile...perhaps having a sex-ed class?

we anxiously waited for the "pink floyd" to appear but after an hour and a half of foreplay, they still hadn't consummated their love! Here is the male rolled over on his back...which is usually when his pocket rocket springs up..males keep their penis in a pocket and they just retract the muscles and out it pops...you can see the penal slit in this whale on the left. Notice the pectoral fin on the whale on the right has the tip bit off and killer whale "rake" marks where an orca had the flipper in his mouth and left the teeth marks..yikes.

and we weren't the only voyeurs...there were 4 common dolphins circling around and in between the lovers.

here is a slide show of the mating dance

Reminds me of the time off La Jolla I took my 2 little girls out whale watching.
Saw the same whale threesome-thing Shari was just describing.

Was very cool to see.

One of the males rolled over and sort of exposed his rather large "main unit" to the world.

My little girls asked "Daddy what is that big long thingie?"......

Well, sex education started in our household right with that event....

Great photos Shari! Love Asuncion

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.
