Gray whale calf rescued in Ojo de Liebre
here is a great video of a team that rescued a gray whale calf in Ojo de Liebre lagoon. It is important to get the calf back in the water as soon as
possible to avoid internal injuries from the weight of it and these guys did a great job with a sling and digging a trench. Hopefully it was reunited
with it's mother.
Calves need to rest on their mother's back every little while when they are young and if they get separated from the mother, they will go to the shore
to rest and if the tide goes out they become stranded. This calf was either separated or it's mother died. Other nursing mothers can adopt an
abandoned calf so we will hope for the best for this little girl.

Wow- thanks for sharing this. They did a great job.
Was this near the ejido, or in another area of the lagoon? And have they been trained in this, or did they improvise? I kept wondering if they would
grab a tarp to get under the whale to help pull it, but glad to see rolling worked.
I've watched efforts to move adult whales (dead) off beaches in San Diego- hard work, even with heavy equipment to help. They are dense weight.
Two weeks ago at San Ignacio nearly 30 guides and fishermen completed a training course on disentangling whales from fishing nets. They participated
in 1 day of lecture, half day on water for skills practice, then half day of final training. They all celebrated with a group photo at the end.
It's great to see communities pull together this way to be prepared to help whales. I hope this one reconnects with mom or is adopted by another.

what a wonderful course to offer in San Ignacio...it would be a great thing to teach all coastal fishermen. There are proven techniques that are more
effective than others...such as the tarp method.
Once an abandoned calf stayed with our panga hoping to be adopted. I will keep an eye out on our next trip on Tuesday for a mom with 2 calves.

DawnPatrol...late March is a bit late for Ojo de Liebre. Our last trip is your best bet would be San Ignacio if possible. There will still be whales
at the mouth of GN so you will see some whales if you go out with the town companies but the experience would be much better at San Ignacio and it's
only a few hours south.

San Ignacio guides see more whales later in season.
Shari- I'm planning to visit GN next weekend,feb 14-16. Will you be guiding trips those days?
And is the restaurant open now? Can you give us an idea of what food and drink they offer?

Yes we will be there and super busy and most likely there will be a Valentines Day fiesta...the restaurant is now open...I had shrimp & scallops
yesterday. Two ladies from the ejido are cooking and offer the usual breakfast fare, seafood, chicken, beef etc. and they have soda, juice, coffee,
tea & beer.
Is that President's Day Weekend? the lagoon is a zoo then with big bus trips...not my favorite time at all.
