If the bulk of the funding to build the highways is through gasoline taxes and motor vehicle registration revenues, then motoring public has paid for the construction and privilege to use these roads. The bicyclist has contributed to the construction and maintenance of these roads HOW? Seems to me with the inherent hazard of a 15 lb bicycle competing for space with a three ton vehicle (or larger) that travels at four times the speed (or greater), it would be sensible to separate the two. In this case, separation might mean that the bicycling community pays for the construction and maintenance of their own pathways adjacent to the highways. IMHO
I'm not anitbike; I have owned plenty of mountain bikes in the past 35 years and ride them avidly, but far from the highways and motor vehicles.

If you notice most highways have fences to keep range animals off of roads and they are even doing this as far down as Cabo San Lucas and all of Hwy 19. Why? Because anything appearing on a road designed for maximum speed limits is dangerous for whatever is going at a snail pace and the vehicle going at the maximum speed limit.

If we all did what cyclists wanted, we would all drive at 20 miles an hour all the time just so we could be respectful of them in case they happen to appear when it is inconvenient or dangerous for all parties.

I am not anti-cyclist, I AM pro-life.
