And...if all else fails, just tell the cop how you've been enjoying his mother on the weekends.:lol:

I have never been pulled over in Baja. Only military/police checks. I have been pulled over elsewhere in Mexico and all over Central America.

I have only paid one bribe - a warm can of club soda to a cop in Nicaragua.

My routine is simple:

  • Be calm, patient, rationale and friendly
  • Speak no Spanish. You're a friendly but very confused gringo.
  • Have an extra drivers license. I have several, so I don't mind giving one away. I've always gotten it back though.
  • Pretend you don't understand the charges
  • Pretend you don't understand the request for bribe
  • If the cop speaks English, you speak German, Texan, Bostonian or maybe Chinese.
  • If the cop speaks German/Texan/Bostonian/Chinese, tell him you will go along to the station or the bank to pay your fine

Invariably I'm waved on down the road. Sometimes this takes up to 15 minutes before they get bored.

You forgot LOS CUERNOS. Hold your hand up and extend forefinger and pinkie straight up as you tell the cop what Dennis suggests...

This is effective. You'll prove it just before seeing a muzzle flash.

Maybe a "poll" is needed-

How many times have you been stopped in Baja?

How many tickets have you had in the USA for the last 10 years?

Maybe there is a correlation? :-) :-)

Saw a Swede in a thong in "The Office" several years ago.

She stopped me dead in my tracks.
