Great road... they were repaving long sections of it way back when we used it last (July, 2010)... but that was long ago now!

The first 20 miles out of Ensenada aren't a lot of fun (curvy mountain road, slow trucks possible)... but once you are near Ojos Negros, it is mostly straight and fast highway beyond.

Point of interest along the way are reached by side roads:
Laguna Hanson, Sierra Juarez lake
El Alamo, gold mine
Santa Catarina, Pai pai Indian village, Santa Catalina mission site
Mike's Sky Rancho, guest ranch motel, campground, trout stream

I drove that road in 2011 and the highway was acceptable. But since it has been almost three years ago we went, thats why i was asking the today conditions. In fact id rather use the ensenada highway to go to San Felipe, than the one from Mexicali, which i might add its in better conditions, but its very boring sight seeing. :tumble:

I thought the Tecate Road was Hwy-3. Are both roads Hwy-3? Is this something so totally Mexican that I'm not supposed to understand?

Seriously Dennis?

Yes, the original north-south Mexico #3 (Tecate to El Sauzal/Ensenada) annexed the State Hwy. 16 (Ensenada to Crucero la Trinidad/ 31 miles north of San Felipe) soon after that highway was paved in 1978... So for like 30 years it also has been Mexico #3. :light:
