How much for a Tijuana Taxi?

I will be arriving at San Ysidro at 12:30 AM Sunday morning.

I suppose I will walk across the border. I don't know how long that takes, I am figuring half an hour. So I will be across the border around 01:00 AM Sunday morning.

From there, I will need a ride, to right across the street from Real Del Mar Golf & Resort. This is right off Hwy 1D. The total distance is about 16 miles, or 25 kilometers.

I have read that Taxi Libre is the cheapest option. About what would I expect to spend?

You are in uncharted territory, Walter. There are too many variables to even begin answering your question, but I suppose someone here will take a stab at it.

I would venture to say it would be about $50.00 however once you walk across contact the first taxi and ask, then go to another and take the cheapest quote.

This late at night you MUST be careful. Once in a cab you should be fine.

Ask your taxi driver to be taken to a

PARADA de TAXI de RUTA

for your destination.

Why not just stay at the MOTEL 6 in San Ysidro? It's inexpensive, and very close to the border crossing? It's by far the best Flea Farm 6 of the bunch, and there's coffee to see you off in the morning. The folks at the desk are very helpful.

To see where it is, just Google Motel 6 San Ysidro. It's pretty new so you might have to root around to find that "property".

Take a $5 taxi to Hotel Espana on Avenida Revolution. Hotel costs $MX 450 pesos on a weekend with a 100 peso refund when you leave in the morning and don't steal the remote. If they are full go to Hotel Aqua Rio on Constitution between 8th and 9th.

Enjoy Ave. Revo! At 1:30 AM Saturday it will be jumping. Go to the clubs on Ave. Sexta like Porkys, Clube Estrella, and Blanco y Negra. If you feel like seeing MX go to Las Pulgas a few blocks farther on.

Just a few blocks in the other direction is Zona Norte and all the red light clubs.

Then Sunday morning go find a Ruta Taxi (or Collectivo) to your destination. These are small vans that cost about 20 pesos. They have lots of stops but you are here to see Baja, right?

Just remember that not all collectivos go to your location so find the right corner.

If I'm staying in Tijuana anywhere near the tourist area of Avenida Revolución, then I would stay at the " Hotel Ticuan" because it's right in the middle of the action depending which way you want to go, and some of the places SlyOnce is talking about are within walking distance or a short cab ride. This is a business hotel, but many people use it for casual use, and it's not that expensive. It sure beats a Motel 6, and it's in a safe area. The best part is you will actually be in Mexico, and not the boring USA.

A yellow taxi ride is about $5 dollars, to this hotel on anywhere on Revolución. Now when the Taxi Libre was really popular and the cab driver turned on their meters all the time, a trip would be about $2 dollars and change, but since gas prices went up the last few years, the taxi drivers even in a Taxi Libre want $4 or $ 5 dollars, and I gave up, and just pay the taxi drivers $ 5 dollars, or cheaper if you use pesos. They deserve the extra money. Now they have taxi signs asking for $10 dollars, but if you keep walking where you see Taxi Libres or even yellow cabs, they will all settle for $4 or $ 5 dollars Revolución.

I normally don't travel anywhere in Tijuana where I would pay more than $10 dollars for a cab fair, because I would just drive my car inside of Tijuana, and just drive there myself, but the last time I paid $10 dollars to the border when when I was about 10 miles away, and so I'm guessing you could get that 16 mile taxi ride for about $15 and anything more than $20 I would negotiate and get quotes from a few taxi drivers and then go with the cheapest one. The key is negotiate the price before you get in the cab.

Here is information of the highly rated Hotel Ticuan:

Hotel Ticuan
Calle 8va #8190 | Zona Centro, Tijuana 22000, Mexico

Here is the hotel's website: ( if this hotel is too much money. I know a few 200 peso dive motels in really bad areas of TJ too)

Of course I know the Ticuan, its $80 or more on weekends, which is why I recommended the Espana. Small rooms, clean, nice, and 1/2 the price. If our poster wants, he could also walk to the Pueblo Amigo from the border.

It's 800 pesos for a single at the weekend. $62. The Aqua Río is cheaper, though.

How is the noise level at the "Espana?" This is one reason why I shy away from hotels right on Avenida Revolución, although Avenida Revolución, isn't what it used to be many years ago.

I'm sorry to report some recent noise level complaints and internet usage issues even at " Hotel Ticuan."

Years ago before all these nice hotels popped up I used to recommend " Hotel La Villa de Zaragoza" that's just off Revolución, a couple of blocks and 7th street: Location: Ave. Madero #1120 entre 7ma. y 8va., Zona Centro, 22000.

It's very similar to a Motel 6, and I used to love to order room service, which was really from a Denny's type of restaurant nearby that charged the same low price that you would get in the actual restaurant.

Probably the best deal I could recommend for hotel, or motel choices would be the Tijuana love motels like La Mansión: Location: Vía Rápida Poniente #1129, Zona Rio, 22320, Tijuana.

Better yet, "Motel Premier:" Location: Juan Ojeda Robles #11811, Col. Mineral Santa Fe, 22416, Tijuana
Phone: 607-5320.

Love motels usually allow guest to stay only four hours at a time, but 'Motel Premier" has a few rooms you can stay over night, and you'll pay less that half of what you would pay for an upscale hotel in Tijuana's business district. Of course if you go to an upscale discrete motel like the "Motel Premier" it would be nice to have a lover, or at least a wife, girlfriend. or even boyfriend depending on your preferences.

Don't be alarmed when they keep your driver license while you stay here, as this is the way most of these love motels operate, as you drive up with you car, pay for the room, and pull into your garage, shut the door, and enter your upscale room. They also have excellent top restaurant like room and bar service that's priced reasonable with a large selections of foods and drinks. You will get your drivers license back when you check out. ( the cab once charge me $10 dollars back to the border, which I thought was a little high for the trip, and if I had a 100 peso bill, I would have just gave him that to save a little money, although that's not the exact exchange rate, but it's worth trying if you think the cab driver is charging you too much...then again, it pays to ask what the cab fare will be before you get inside the cab)

You have to ask for a room facing Constitución or 8th at the Ticuán, especially on the weekends, or all you will hear is thumping music from Las Pulgas.

My cheap hotel go-to is Hotel América on 4th and Negrete.

Thanks for all the replies.

Maybe, if there is no huge price difference, it would make more sense for me to stay near the SD airport?

That way, I don't have to scramble to catch the last 992, or the last SD trolley. I don't have to walk into TJ at night, and I can get to sleep earlier.
