Whats the difference between a FMM, FMT or a Visa?

FMM = FMT = tourist permit, migratory permit
Visa = temp or perm visitor
Requirements depend on country of origin and destination country

FMM replaced the FM-T a couple years ago. They are tourist travel permits and work like the way visas do in other counties.

Thanks, gnukid and David K. I've traveled in Baja since the late 50's. I've never had a Visa but always had car insurance. On my last trip I was hit
from behind by a bus. I was going to use my mexican insurance, but was told by a gringo it was no good because I was an illegal. I will get a Visa on
my next trip the end of June.

Whether you were illegal or not depends on many factors like time in baja and location. It can't hurt to call the adjuster and ask? Or state your case
here and someone can help determine if you were legal or not. The adjusters profit and are very helpful. They are unlikely to draw a flag unless its
an obvious issue.

I was about 10 miles north of El Rosario heading south at 8:30 PM. An ABC bus was passing me in the canyon and hit me with his right side mirror. It
knocked a hole in my left rear and lodged against his door. I helped the driver open the door by prying the mirror off the bus.

Sounds like the bus driver is culpable.
I don't think anyone should drive Baja roads, or anywhere for that matter, without a dash-cam for a witness.
And you, Joe, shouldn't be driving at night.

The insurance issued by Baja Bound (and others) is not withheld because of any questionable visa status... we asked Geoff about this specifically.

Both the San Diego Mex Ins Brokers CLAIM your Ins is
good without proper Mex immigration papers, fmm. Me,
I would not trust that statement, too many IF'S. I
would not want to be asked for an fmm by Mex City Cop,
Ins Adjuster (have never heard of that), or a Fed Hwy
Patrol and not have one. Have read on at least one
Mex Ins policy that for the Ins to be valid, one has to
be in the Country legally, I don't want to get into a
push and shove with a Ins Co

There is no Mexican "visa" for US and Canadian citizens. Visa is something that you apply through the embassy in your country. Instead, there is a
tourist permit issued at the border, called a Tourist Card. Official name was FMM, 2 years ago changed to FMT.
