Anyone know about "Vonage telephone" in Baja?

I went to Walmart Chula Vista to buy a Magic jack device for my house in Tijuana to save money when calling the US. A rep from Vonage talked me into buying a kit with a "box" which plugs into my modem. The kit has 3 motorola phones. I think I will only need one phone for my house. The rep said the phones usually work up to several hundred feet from the "black box" so I might let my neighbor use one. All for $17 dllrs. Discounted from $170 because of a promotional deal.

I got 3 mos. of service for $9.99 per month and then the rate is $27./mo. including 250 minutes per month to call any MX number. I can "port my US cell phone to use my vonage account to use my vonage home device from anywhere and to anywhere. No contract.

I haven't tried it yet and wonder if anyone has used Vonage to call to/from MX. It all sounded good as the salesman talked...

I used to be able to lock on and call free but for the last several months, I have to pay roaming. I have cricket and I have recently been looking but haven't found any free options. This led me to Walmart to buy a magic jack. By the way, Walmart doesn't have Magic jack anymore. At least the clerk in electronics said MJ has disappeared and now there's no sign of them for several weeks.

got it. the reason I asked, when I lived in SADM I tried walmarts "smart talk" phone. these phones can not roam, you're either on a u.s. cell tower or you get nothing. it worked great, if I traveled a mile north!

Vonage and other IP Phones are only as good as your internet connection as mentioned above. Another option, if you have a smart phone, is to set your phone to use wi-fi calling only while in Mexico and not get charged for roaming. You need wi-fi at home and where ever else you can get wi-fi, your cell calls will be free.

Also, I think the vonage modem supports 3 lines but eventually you need to pay separate fee for each line.

I've used a Vonage phone at a friend's house in Rosarito to call the US. It works fine. He has a regular "cheapy" phone plugged into the modem. Check out their website for different calling plans. They probably have several based upon your usage.

Magicjack is fine for connecting with relatives, ect. It costs $20 bucks a YEAR. You will have a call disconnect occasionally but it is fine since MagicJack is sooooo cheap.
If you "work" have conference calls, do business on the phone then Vonage is a better choice, but it costs lots more money every month.

Vonage works fine here in Loreto. be advised that the 27/month comes closer to 45 with all the taxes, etc. after a year or so, when I realized I was only calling the USA and vice versa, and I could do pretty much the same cheaper with a Telmex service, I called to cancel. they offered me a USA/Mexico only service for 10 bucks or so, again, plus 5 or so with taxes. which I went with as I like USA folks being able to call me, and having a USA number.
