Importing a RZR to Mexico
I'm thinking of buying a RZR in the San Diego area and having the dealer import it to Mexico and ship it to Baja Sur. Have any of you fellow Nomads
done this before? Any suggestions....

It can be done. Have two neighbors that got them licensed in South Dakota so they can use them on the streets. They had to get some extras like
windshield and turn signals I think to make street legal. But as far as who to go to I don't know.
Nice rigs. Wish I could afford one.

I've imported golf carts...tractors...motor grader...excavator...
the dealer cant do it...you need a import broker at the border
figure your cost will be 20% of the apprised value plus shipping
and that wont be cheap these days
it would be way easier if you trailered it to the border and did it there yourself

I imported a quad no problem. Watch where it was manufactured. Mexico has different rates if built overseas.talk to your exporter about not paying us
tax I use a company called Aliser. Great service and delivery to my door in mex

What do they do at the Baja border if you are trailering a RZR down? Must you import it? What do all the vehicles coming down for the Baja off road
races do?

I've brought several orv's down, side by side and dirt bike a few days ago. Show them the registration, don't use the word "import", say "vacation".
Don't know what the local rules are at your location but it doesn't seem to be a big deal in my neighborhood, people drive/ride them most everywhere,
as long as you aren't creating a nuisance you won't have a problem.

By "dirt bike" I guess it not registered for the street. Have you trailered bikes that are registered with a street plate? I am thinking of taking
my 2 enduo bikes in my trailer to Jalisco but the vehicle permiso only allows me one vehicle at a time (the trailer is ok). But if they consider the
bikes as off-road, I wonder if I can take them.

This seems to be the easiest approach, and is the way I brought my quad down. However, due to the nature of CJ's question it may be that he has not
the means or desire to trail the vehicle down. I would bet the street legal registration I mentioned above is not necessary in most small towns and
villages. I suppose I would look around and see what everyone else is doing.

Good question, I don't know what a "vehicle permiso" is. None of the vehicles are registered nor are they street legal in the US. I was asked for
registration at Tecate this time, I explained to him that New Mexico doesn't register off road vehicles. He said registration is required but let me
pass as they have done the other 50 or so times I have brought off road vehicles across. I had 2 vehicles with me this time, it didn't seem to matter.
I have brought a street legal bike across several times both ridden and on a trailer, no issues there.
"Life is tough".....It's even tougher if you're stupid.....

Amen brother. I am continually amazed at the Norte Americano values that many of you try to "import" to Mexico. This is not the first instance of
someone worrying to death an issue that is not an issue here in Mexico. Just bring the damn thing in, drive it and get on with your life. Who's
checking? That being said I'm sure someone is gonna get on here and tell us how his belchfire V8 Yoklemobile was seized by the Federales and his
mother was thrown in Jail because her name was on the title.

I recently brought down a used quad in a cargo trailer through Tecate.
I had no registration and only a dealers report of sale and invoice in my name.
The agent girl asked me if the quad will be coming back to the USA or staying in MX.
My RZR quick mind said "coming back in a few weeks"
Her response was "have a nice vacation sir"

I have seen some side-by-sides running around LTO, with SD plates.. Makes sense to avoid the CA sales tax, and be street legal to drive on the town
streets an out on the hwy if coming north or south of town..
SD plates would save on the importation fees..Lopez Marine could take delivery from the dealer to ship it to LTO..

Update
Nomads thanks for all the suggestions Bob you are right on...after a few years of bringing quads, wave runners, a few boats down to Loreto and various
stuff, I thought I'd try a new approach. Being a full timer and a Mx national I thought I would just do it online and go fishing, instead of driving
seven hundred miles ONE way. It worked out GREAT, the only thing I missed was dinner at the Jardines. I purchased the RZR, avoided sales tax, had it
imported so it has a title and can be licensed to be street legal and didn't have to buy a trailer to transport it to Loreto. It cost a little extra
but it was well worth it. I can drive it from Loreto to my fish camp in Lopez no problem.....follow the Baja Mil course if I choose. If anyone is
interested in doing this U2 me and I can give you the names if my contacts.
It's a really cool machine....I would post a pic of it, but that would start a whole new Rant....again thanks. CJ:

CJ......Congratulations! That was quick. I'm sure that helpful comments from the likes of your boy weebray made it a lot easier.
Last I checked it was about 100 miles to Lopez Mateos. And you can take this new vehicle there either over the road, torn up as it is, or cross
country? I've got to see this thing.
