night race San Bruno - Mulegè last weekend
We had a great race here last weekend with a huge turn out of racers and spectators. Crowds gathered in SB, on the roads to PC, along the highway and
in the valley. It was not only dark and dusty, but foggy! As usual, the after party went on all night with a live band and many tkts. Noyt many pics
due to it being a night race.

So glad you all had a fun time, W.Airstream.
I wasn't there, but it was fun to see everybody's buggy riding around town these days. My 18-year old pickup was at the mechanic the week before and
he had to give us a hold-over 'cause he, Luis, and his son had a buggy in the race and family came from all over the península. They had a great time
and came in third, I think.
My pickup didn't compete-- even tho' she's a Toyoto Taco and has the best mechanic in Mulge, she takes it easy on these bumpy roads.

Busted My Buggy!
All,
My good friend Richard (AS Willie) has woefully understated the tortuous course conditions and complete insanity of this year’s race which was held at
night! That’s right, at night!
Richard invited me and Nina to pre-race the course with him one day a few weeks ago. I’ve raced in the Baja 500 in years past and have plenty of off
road experience. Nina and I actually drove our buggy on some of the sections of this year’s Baja 500 course in mid-May so how challenging could the
San Bruno-Mulege course be?
It was miserable. Arroyo boulders scraping the under carriage, shock killing washboard, heavy gravel beds, razor sharp lava shards, soft silty talcum
powder sand, hellaciously steep grades, deep super slick mud and more. Nearly destroyed my 1600cc UTV buggy. Broke two teeth on my center load rack
and pinion steering box, decoupled my steering shaft and burned out my clutch – all in the first 20 km. Thankfully we broke down near Julio’s ranch
where he and his family were able to rescue us.
I should have suspected driving in the San Bruno boonies would be a challenge when Richard said, “Walt, turn right at the first dead goat, follow the
course markers to the dead cow and then left, down into the boulder field..."
Congrats to Richard, all the contestants and a tip of the hat to all the finishers. tx ws
