Now he'll be able to get the tertiary and specialist care he certainly needs. From the description of the event with brain and spinal injuries, he'll
have a very long recovery period, tough on the whole family system. Helluva way to end a happy vacation. I truly feel for them; saw it several times
as a guide and working EMS. It's more than just him that's affected; that 'pebble in a pond' sends out rings over and over...... Buena suerte y vaya

Todays paper said he was brought back to CA but not Bakersfield. They didn't say where but I would think San Diego. The other couple that was with
them are back in Bakersfield.

Today the paper said he had undergone three operations at the CA hospital. They still did not say where the hospital is. There are also several local
fundraisers going on to raise money to help out. I wish him a speedy recovery.

I have ridden these zip lines.
The line where the accident occurred does take you close to the cliff face on your left. Though I would imagine that there must of been a good gust
of wind to have swung him against the cliff. It is the last and longest zip run of almost a half mile.

Since you have ridden them, would you say that there is at least a 12 margin between that line that is closest to the cliff and the cliff?
I hope the reports on his condition improve and he recovers fully!

I read where you posted that there should be a 12 foot margin on zip lines and more for the longer lines.
Though I have been at the site as recently as earlier this month, It has been several years since I rode them. As you can see in the videos I posted,
one does come quite close to the cliffs on the left. I could not say if there was atleast 12 ft of clearance.
No doubt the margin is not sufficient for the conditions that day, whether it was 12 ft or more.
This is a long run. 2,800ft. The longer the run the more sway in the cable under windy conditions.

Yes, and the longer the run, the more margin there should be. These things should be built to withstand these conditions ---- most of the time, there
will not be the gusts, etc., but all of that needs to be taken into consideration. Too many are not designed that well.
But still, if someone is willing to take the risk, they should go for it.

So sad this happened. I believe the wind may have been the cause of this accident.
This thread first appeared the day after the accident occurred, I believe.
I recall when reading it thinking about the huge wind that was blasting the whole of the southern península the same day. I was in Mulege that day,
not Cabo, so cannot speak of the conditions there, but if they compared to what we experienced in Mulege they blew up, like a chubasco-- seemingly out
of nowhere-- and howled.

If the accident did occur the day of the recent chubasco, the winds here in Los Cabos were clocked at over 60 mph and they came up sudden from the
east early that morning.

sounds like very basic flaw, the designer/constructor placed line too close to land, so customer got slammed - or the operator did not do proper
maintenance and cable lost some tension, so customer got slammed
is the ride still open and taking customers?
cheap thrills, lots of fun, until someone gets hurt

This sudden wind occurred on the day of the accident as reported in the news article in post #1 by Mexico Ted. Refer back to page 1, post 1, this
thread, paragraph 4, where the article states the accident occurred Thursday; we can assume Thursday July 24, 2014.

Update from todays local paper.
San Diego:
Brian opened his eye on Aug 16th and was able to recognized his wife Shimeaka. He had his 7th surgery Monday. On Tuesday the doctors told his wife
that Brian was reacting positively to the surgery and hope to move him out of the ICU in 4 days.
His medical bill in Mexico was more than $90,000. Fund raising in Bakersfield continues with family and friends to cover his medical bills.
As a side note, I'm pretty sure his medical bills or most of it in the US are covered by his company medical insurance. Here's hoping a speedy
recovery.
