Barefoot Rodeo in Bahia Asuncion

this year's rodeo or jaripeo of the Traditional Fiestas in Bahia Asuncion was held on the beach for the first time so the cowboys had to take off their boots and barefoot it! It used to be in the baseball stadium but now we have astro turf so no bulls allowed.
I couldnt believe these guys were wrestling bulls in their bare feet!!! It made for a spectacular backdrop!

I love the rancho events when vaqueros (cowboys n girls) come down from the surrounding ranches to compete in friendly events. Everyone is happy to see each other again and the atmosphere is warm...as was the weather this year.

there was calf roping...my amigos from Ejido Benito Juarez are masters at this event.

my favorite event was bull poker where guys volunteers sit around a table and a bull is set loose in the ring. When a guy is scared enough to get up from his chair, he is out of the contest. He goes on to provoke the bull into charging the others still in their chairs. The last guy sitting wins...this was hysterical! Fabian, the winner was one cool cucumber! I tried to get Reno Joe to participate..hahaha..glad he didnt!

when a bull threw a rider and had him on the ground, his buddies threw some chaps on his head to try to distract him...he sure looks good in chaps eh!

there were some tug of wars between ranches and even the cowgirls got into it!

and of course there was lots of ranchero music

these are my favorite local cowgirls! and my favorite horse

Here is a link to an album if someone wants to see all the photos of the event.

I like the festival and your pictures...it kind of summarizes all the fun things to do year round in town.

I'd probably try it after a few shots. Nice photos Shari! Thanks for showing us what we missed by not making it that far south! =)

So, so cool Shari! Love all the photos and how you captured the spirit of the days events. Really love the bull poker event - must have been a lot of fun to watch. I bet the vaqueros enjoyed having an excuse to escape the summer heat up in the hills too!

You guys have too much fun!!!

thank you all for your nice comments....the fiestas are in full swing and town is crazy!!! gypsies are not appreciating the oom pa pa bands playing outside their house!!! hahaha.
Yesterday were the horse races....I won one and lost one...the one I lost was because the horse pulled something and got injured...photos and video later when things calm down. Then the dance and this morning menudo with the Arce clan...next up...a swim to cool off then to the fishing tournament weigh in, more horse races and dance...whew!

You couldn't be talking about my buddy could you? This Souzaphone player never sleeps. He is never tired. He was out on the boats in the ocean, and here the police are protecting him, as they lead off the Cabalgata! He set up 50 feet from a performing band at the Rodeo and took off on his own!!!:lol:
