Yes. I have learned this the hard way - came to buy a ticket on Christmas eve, and then on January 2. Both times 1 hour before departure :)...

I still got there, with some persistence. Both ways. And so did few other people on various stops en route. First time it was another bus 2 hours after the bus that I wanted (and it was still all sold-out), and second time - exactly the time that I wanted. Both times they gave me a ticket without seat number. When the rightful owner of the seat boarded the bus on the next stop, I had to go and sit on my bag. Then some hours later on another stop they assigned me a seat. Holiday season was the only time when I saw the bus completely full. Most other trips I had 2 seats to myself.

If you come to buy - not even a week, but a few days in advance - there won't be any problem. People there don't sweat over planning things waaay in advance, they deal with issues as they go. I like it this way.
