I also could not help but note Father Baegert's low opinion of the soldiers. He called them undisciplined amateurs and claimed he sent a number of them back to Loreto for being unsatisfactory.

I only saw his mentioning the name of one soldier in his entire book - Captain Rivera. He actually had some very complimentary things to say about him.

It appears I've selected the right man to write my novel about.

I need to go find a book I read last year that quoted letters from Baegert. In it I found that description of alligators but it clearly referenced places he saw in his travels before he got to Baja. It looks to me like he copied his own letter into this book and assumed that the gators that he saw must be in the peninsula too. I'll repost if I find the reference for it again.

That would be a good find! I will try and do some digging as well.

Sorry for being late but have had some serious problems lately with my PC freezing and crashing on me. [Think I may have the worst of it fixed]

I just posted another segment of Father Baegert's stay at the mission. Everyone has left and it's just he, his soldier/escort and his wife, and a couple of hundred converts he looks upon as ignorant savages. Check it out and check the little box at the end of the post.

Glad you got the computer fixed.
See my replies on the Historum forums regarding the San Borja photo, for better accuracy.
