Old road thru TJ?
After xing the border at San Yadira is the way to the old road marked....so I don't get lost?

Mex 1 Libre [Free Road]
(not Mex 1-D, Cuota [Toll Road]/Scenic Road).
Lot's of traffic and signals to go through in Tijuana on free road. Most will use Toll Road to Rosarito South and then pop onto free road or cross at
Otay and use the Corredor 2000 to Popotla to avoid the mess and any tolls.

I believe the question from reeljob was referring to crossing at San Ysidro southbound, then picking up the free road.
In my humble opinion, take the toll road south past the first toll booth to the first Rosarito exit. That will put you on the (free road) quicker than
driving through TJ. It will be slow going through Rosarito.....or you can exit at the PEMEX south of Rosarito and avoid all of the in-town traffic

When you say old road through Tijuana, I assume you're referring to Mex. 1 (Libre) along Blvd. Cuauhtemoc Norte/Transpeninsular?
If so, then when crossing into Mexico from San Ysidro, I generally take the road though the Zona Rio area along Paseo de los Heroes and make RIGHT
turn once at the Blvd. Cuauhtemoc Norte/Transpeninsular. Take this road will bypass the couple of tolls and connect you with Mex. 1-D (Cuota) near
Rosarito Norte.
If you are trying to get south of Rosarito or Popotla, then the easier way from the San Ysidro crossing would be to try get on the Via Rapida Poniente
in the direction of La Mesa. This highway should take you along the Tijuana River, then follow all signs in the direction of the Mex. 2
(Mexicali/Tecate), which bring you to the intersection of Corredor Blvd. 2000. Corredor Blvd. 2000 will allow you to make RIGHT turn towards
Rosarito/Ensenada.
A word of caution, the route from Tijuana to Corredor Blvd. 2000 has few gas stations and is easy to get lost especially at night. If it's your first
time I would take it during the day and review a map beforehand. Corredor Blvd. 2000 will connect you with Mex. 1 (Libre) and 1D (Cuota), bypassing
several toll booths & most traffic.

Yup, I think you are right... Libre is free and Liebre is a jackrabbit (Sacammon's Lagoon is Laguna Ojo de Liebre (Eye of the jack rabbit)!

Follow signs for Zona Río and Paseo de los Héroes. Pass the Costco on P. de los H., then follow signs for Ensenada Libre. It'll be a right turn on
Blvd. Cuauhtémoc.
