that was probably a lie to cover the fact that freon can be used in the process of manufacturing meth, or so i'm told.

Earth to Woody....

The old freon type R12 has been out of production for years, by law, in the US...Older refrigerator systems, home AC units, and older autos all used R12 for years before it was phased out by law - due to the belief it harms the ozone layers above us all...

As a result of it not any longer being mfg. for sale in the US, it's price has skyrocketed! You can still buy it in Mexico at a decent price...hence the 'smuggling' efforts of some to 'import' it back to the US and sell for a huge profit, as it's still in demand for older systems - conversion to the modern freon types is real costly, and doesn't seem to operate as efficiently.

...you takes your chances, and pay big-time if you get caught!

Actually Woody isn't out there all that far.

As things required to run meth labs are being controled more meth chefs are turning to alternatives. Freon is used as a substitute for the solvent anhydrous ammonia - but the types of freon used are R11 and R113 which are common and legal amongst air conditioning folks.

I don't know if R12 would work as a substitute but my guess (just based on it's structure) would be yes - but it's value as a refrigerant has to be much more than what it's worth to methamphetamine cookers.

If you want to know more I google it.
