photo of the day - 1972

From National Geographic Magazine, October 1972:

"The shark lunged at me, but I knocked him on the nose with an oyster basket." A battered diving helmet on his knee, 79-year-old Salome Leon reminisces about his days as a diver. Pearling was once the principal industry of La Paz, major city of Southern Baja, but it ended when an unknown ailment killed the oysters in the 1940s. Salome, like many others, turned to fishing."

Maybe showing my ignorance, but don't divers that service the platforms in the North Sea still wear those diving suits and bells??

I think my photographic memory ran out of film
