February Whale Report from Ojo de Liebre (Scammons Lagoon)

It has been a magical month at the lagoon with summer like weather most days so we can swim and wear tank tops! We had two days of storm clouds
accompanied by dramatic lightning and thunder but only a few short squalls at the lagoon. I enjoyed watching the light shows with Whalista at our
Whale Magic base camp and at the canal at sunset.

Here is Whalista trying to show us lightning bolts!

here is our camp and the lagoon palapas at sunset...lots of europeans and some nomads camping and eating at the lagoon restaurant

sunrise at the lagoon is so special

I am rarely in town as the lagoon is such a great place to be all day so havent had a chance to do internet stuff. We have had many great nomads out
to visit and the whale watching has been great as usual.

It has been a very unusual season with over 2,000 whales still in the lagoon...the canals look like rush hour with whales nearly colliding and having
to maneuver to miss each other. There are many teenage males chasing the moms around trying to mate with them but are rarely successful....it has been
funny watching them try though!

The last couple days the whales have been teaching their calves to spy hop! I missed all the double cow/calf spy hops but here are a couple from
today.

We have had many friendly encounters but today was special for me as the momma lifted her head right up to me in the bow so I could lay some love on
her too!

There have been lots of beautiful tails too.

I saw Cola Loca, the calf with the paralyzed tail...so she is still hanging in there but no control over her tail at all like before. And the star of
the lagoon, the famous Saddle and her lover I have named Romeo are all over the place but Romeo is being more protective and swiping at the pangas
with his tail if we come close!

Well, time to head back to whale world...come on out and visit our camp!

Weather images

I couldn't believe the weather! The lightning was so awesome!

Thanks Shari- that photo of me on the beach is classic! I was watching lightning flashes on the horizon, and feeling frustrated because no one else
was seeing them in the distance. (It made me worry: Was I imagining things?)

No, it was very real. Here is more lightning, the next night, as seen from camp: (I tried my best to compress/resize these to acceptable
dimensions...)

Mick has been hosting great campfires for the whale folks at the lagoon the last few days! glad he brought lots of wood and beer!

the last couple days we had epic trips where the calves are finally learning and really getting into being loved on by humans.

both the mom and calf enjoyed being rubbed down by our gang!

check out these baby baleens!

I am a lucky girl to get to this every day!!!

I forgot to mention that I did spot Cola Loca with her mom a few days ago and she is still having a hard time swimming as she has no use of her tail
but seemed fine and growing.

this little guy had fun playing with the seaweed!

and a pretty decent calf breach

here is a mom showing off her privates
