With whale populations on the increase and tour boats all over the place, it is no surprise there are accidents.

I heard about this at the lagoon as we were fastening our life vests for a whale trip. Rumour was that a gray whale breached on a boat which is highly unlikely and certainly not what happened...I figured it was a humpback. Whales use their tails for self defense and lord help anyone on the receiving end of an aggressive tail slap. A good reminder to always have your life jacket done up!

Agree, more people on the water creates more chance for this sort of accident.

And gray whales use their tales for defense/protection vs orcas, so they know what they're doing.

That's why that one that raised it's tail up high near the panga, as we approached last month (feb 14 or 15) really scared me. Very unusual behavior... Best to be safe and leave them alone when that happens.

whales & PFD'S

whales can and will breach/jump any time they want and sailboats get hit all the time...less with pwr boats as they can hear the motors.....So whats the answer ?? not that easy..when its hot a PFD of any design is a b-tch to wear..and there is also factor of "I have not hit a whale in 40 yrs of boating" !!why should I worry ?? I have come VERY close at 55 mph had a whale breach/surface/roll near my boat s and its like .....driving a car (chit happens fast) fing crazy.....for me and my crew wearing a PFD is a safe way to go..and Yes,,my dog has a PFD with reflective tape (night time recover) and grab handle.....
