Civil Unrest

Hola Todo, I just received this from Dr. Bill McDavid, who is one of the volunteers at the Flying Sams clinic at the Los Pinos ranch south of San Quintin. It was written by a young man named Alfredo, another volunteer at the clinic that I had the pleasure of working with over the course of several clinics:

Subject: San Quintin

Alfredo was our very helpful liaison at the hotel until he moved to Mexico City to live with his parents in order to further his writing career. Samuel replaced him. If you’re on Facebook, search “Talk Baja” – there is some information there about the situation.

Sr. Bilito

Hi Bill I seen you just had your clinic in SQ. I'm getting reports that workers of the farms got in a civil unrest movement blocking highways and burning buildings there. They are claiming better salaries and better living conditions. In some places it got violent, looting businesses and now the government forces are getting involved, moving from Ensenada to calm things there. I don't know details, there's a few videos in the web.

I'm guessing your next trip is a month distance but be sure to check in conditions before you fly. Please pass the voice to the other chapter. Maybe is nothing huge but it's been in the news and I hear some hotel workers cannot go to work and others can't leave.

Regrettably our country is suffering from an illness called corruption and Los Pinos (hanging with politicians always looking for favors so they can't be regulated while they exploit the poor not providing for health services, proper housing, using more water for fields than for families, paying low wages) and many other well-positioned businesses are a part of it. Plus the lack of education in those areas where non family planning is made, non sexual education, low alphabetization, etc.

I'm sorry I extended here. I seen this is one of the worst governments we had in years. They are talking in privatizing the water now in order to use it for Fracking and other purposes. You know what got privatized like that? The Mexican telephone company that belonged to the state. Now it's own by Carlos Slim- you sure know who is him. The second richest man in the world.

The daughter of the wife of the president used a 7000 dollars dress bought with the money of the people for her visit to London with the queen. This persons in power have no decency for the poor they govern upon. Two days ago a news radio station fired the better journalist in the country that discovered the corruption with the ruling party. The president of that party (PRI) in my city had a prostitution ring within the building of such party paid with the money the citizens give to them. That was one of the cases this journalists discovered. Another –you may know it– was of the house of the wife of the president. A 7 or 8 million dollar house bought trough a company that has benefited by making public works for the government, like highways and other infrastructures profiting millions of dollars, and not dozens of millions. More. That was too an investigation by the same journalist. Carmen Aristegui.

In a normal country those persons involved in such corruption will get fired and maybe jail. Here, they fired the journalists that discovered the cases. Let me apologize for mixing all things together but it is where this country dwells. Sorry for extending this much. I send you my best regards and always be safe in your trips.

Alfredo
