Damaged Mexican Peso Bills
Has anybody ever tried to replace or exchange damaged peso bills?
I have three 500 peso bills with large tears in them. Tried taping them back together but several merchants have refused to accept them.
Can they be turned in somewhere (other than the Treasury in Mexico City) and exchanged for undamaged currency?

Some places in the world are extremely picky about their currency and it's appearance. When we visited Peru, you had to be careful about even bending
the paper currency. My sis'in'law actually ironed some of hers so that it could be used.
I'd recommend the bank approach if you have an account, they're usually a bit more forgiving.

Tape them up nicely and use them to pay a restaurant bill. Just tell them, it's that or nada, after dinner, of course. They can deal with the bank.

Yeah they're extremely anal about that, I ended up having to store banknotes between pages in a paperback book to make sure they weren't bent

I usually fill the gas tank, pay with the taped bill and if they complain I just say that's all I have...

Thanks everybody.
Guess I'll stop being so nice about it when the taped bills are questioned.
Next time I put 1,000 or 1,500 pesos of fuel in my truck, they get one of the damaged bills and the typical Mexican shoulder shrug followed by a quick
"Ni modo".

Si,
Actually, two 18 gallon tanks for a total of 36.
It hurts when fuel is close to $4.00 / gallon.
