DALLAS (CBS.MW) - ChevronTexaco said late Thursday its plans to deliver natural gas to Mexico moved forward after its Mexico unit was awarded a permit for a natural gas import terminal and won a bid to construct and operate the offshore terminal.

The terminal will help Mexico meet growing demand for energy, the company said.

The proposed terminal will be built off the coast of Baja California, Mexico, about 8 miles offshore. The terminal will also allow ChevronTexaco de Mexico to possibly supply nearby markets with excess capacity, the company said.

The terminal's initial capacity will be 700 million cubic feet of natural gas a day, but it can be expanded based on demand, the company said.
