El Muerto

I believe the island in this photo is El Muerto in or just outside of Gonzaga Bay. (Help me out here, David K.)

I'm told the island is so named because it looks like a dead man layed out, arms folded with hands on chest. From the panga I did not really get the image. But I was looking over photos and, voila!, here he is!

When Elizabeth and I were driving north towards Puertecitos, I pointed out how the island looks like a man lying on his back, on the ocean. Only, it was a different island than you pictured above! Yours looks like the same, as well.

Named Islas Encantadas or the 'Enchanted Islands', there are five distinct islands, and not all maps call each by the same name. The most frequent used name appears first. From North to South:

1) El Huerfanito (all alone, near the shore of the peninsula, is the little orphan).

2) El Muerto or Miramar.

3) Lobos or Salvatierra or Coloradito.

4) Encantada or El Cholludo

5) San Luis or Encantada or Salvatierra.

5a) a tiny island: Isla Pomo or Spire is just east of San Luis.

In Gonzaga Bay is Isla San Luis Gonzaga, also called Willard Island on some maps.

In this picture looking south, Huerfanito is lit by the sun and the others are beyond.

Thanks for the information David. Possible that I have my islands confused - or perhaps my info on the name is just wrong. I was fortunate enough to receive a tour by panga of the Enchanted Islands. We stopped and played at one of the most northern ones, beautiful black obsidian-like small beach/cove.

How about some of you boat people and fishermen.... got any island photos for us?

In checking with my Gonzaga Bay Satellite poster (from SatPrints.com), which shows some of the Enchanted Islands, I think your little island is Isla Pomo, off shore from Isla San Luis...
