I picked up the same two Baja books, along with a bunch of others in the last few weeks. Markes Johnson also wrote a book about six hikes in the area around Punta Chivato.

I just finished reading Baja Legends, and am now reading God and Mr. Gomez.

I just read a very different book (the English is awful) that I have to say I really liked after all. It can be read in a couple hours:

MY STANGE MEXICAN TALE by Jeandre Gerber

I downloaded a kindle version for .99 quite a while ago and just got round to reading it now.

It talks openly about death and drugs, so if these are issues for you - stay away! The writer is actually South African and life suddenly made him grow up really fast.

Ateo, both these book are great! I used Wiki to understand some of the language for Markes book but it reads very well.

Some other notable books to have on a Baja trip...

Depending on your reason for going, some of these my add to your trip's enjoyment. Many, many others are just great reading for when you are not in Baja (such as Graham Mackintosh's books or Erle Stanley Gardener's Baja adventure books). Baja Legends (by Greg Niemann) was already mentioned above, but I too recommend it to add some interest to the trip. If you want a brief history of all 28 missions in Baja (as well as the 21 in Alta), I naturally recommend the book by Max Kurillo, Erline Tuttle, and I (link in my sig for The Old Missions...)

Greg, you already know I enjoyed it very much. I'm the guy who ran into an older lady with your book at the San Diego airport, and plunked down his copy on the counter next to the lady's signed copy. Although my copy is not signed, I have a personal email from the author that I keep in the book...
